This has been one of our most adventurous undertakings to date and took many months of planning. The idea was first raised by Mike Bever and enthusiastically welcomed by the Committee, as it involved both food and wine. After duly considering quotes from caterers, Ruth Bever and Carol Moore convinced the Committee that the profits would be enhanced by doing most of the catering ourselves and enlisting the help of the WI. Tickets were sold out weeks before the event and in total 72 members and their friends attended.

The evening turned out to be a splendid occasion. Sir David Mitchell, former Conservative MP for Basingstoke, talked throughout the meal giving advice on how to taste wine and information on the region and its wines. Different wines accompanied each course, finishing with an excellent Chateauneuf du Pape to complement the Fromage de Brebis du Pays de Basque. The evening ended with an auction and an opportunity to buy some of the excellent wines.

A special thankyou must go to Ruth and Mike Bever and Carol Moore for their hard work and also to Jean Harwood for liaising with the WI.

Sir Michael Bever describing the journey from  Auxerre to Avignon.
Carol Moore searched the area for smoked trout and almost exhausted supplies at local supermarkets.
The delicious venison stew was cooked by Ruth Bever in these hay boxes.
